BESTMED Partners in Research

BESTMED Welcomes Major Investment in AI-Driven Aged Care Research

BESTMED is proud to partner with Dr Nasir Wabe from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI) at Macquarie University on a $4.4 million 2024 Early to Mid-Career Researchers Grant Opportunity awarded through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

Announced yesterday, this significant funding will support a multi-year research initiative to develop an AI-augmented platform that addresses one of aged care’s most pressing challenges: reducing the unnecessary use of medications in residential settings.

Dr Wabe’s project will harness artificial intelligence to provide personalised, data-driven insights, helping clinicians make informed, resident-centred deprescribing decisions. The result will be safer, more coordinated care and improved quality of life for older Australians.

“This investment in next-generation AI tools is a critical step toward transforming aged care and builds on BESTMED’s ongoing research and development to improve medication safety,” said Phil Offer, Chief Executive Officer, BESTMED. “We applaud Dr Wabe’s vision and look forward to seeing this platform empower clinicians with timely, evidence-based support at the point of care.”

BESTMED is proud to partner on our third project with Macquarie University to create impact at scale by rolling out research-proven technology across our base of over 1,200 homes. This collaboration ensures that innovations developed through the research are translated directly into real-world improvements in care delivery.

The research will be led by Macquarie University, with the chief investigator team including researchers from The University of Western Australia, Central Adelaide Local Health Network, Edith Cowan University, The University of Queensland, University of Adelaide, University of Sydney, and University of Technology Sydney.

As Australia modernises aged care, BESTMED continues to support innovations that deliver real impact in the lives of residents and the professionals who care for them.
